switch-rpgs-to-play-now

The Nintendo Switch has had loads of great games since it came out in 2017. It’s got a bunch of cool RPGs, too! Here are some of the best Switch RPGs you should check out, in no specific order. And remember, there will be even more awesome RPGs coming out for the Switch in the future!

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a huge RPG made by Monolith Soft, the same folks who helped Nintendo create Breath of the Wild. You’ll wander around a big world filled with Titans, which are giant living beings that carry entire civilizations on their backs. While you explore, you’ll meet lots of characters, complete quests, and save the world. It’s a typical Monolith Soft game, although it still has some issues. But overall, it’s another great game in the Xenoblade series and definitely worth playing on the Switch.

Sea Of Stars

Many people were attracted to Sea of Stars because of its retro-style graphics and turn-based combat. In battles, you can time your button presses to make your attacks stronger and take less damage. The game follows the Children of the Solstice, who use Eclipse Magic to fight The Fleshmancer’s tyranny. With its nostalgic story and new gameplay twists, Sea of Stars offers a unique RPG adventure.

Undertale

Undertale is a cleverly made RPG that knows what makes the genre tick. It flips expectations on their head, almost making fun of RPGs. You’ll explore a quirky underworld, where you can do things like date a skeleton or cook with a half-fish woman, or you can choose to do none of that—the game lets you decide. Despite its simple appearance, Undertale surprises you in many ways. It’s got great characters, a unique battle system, and a cool soundtrack. Give it a try; you won’t regret it.

Live A Live

Live A Live finally arrived in the West in 2022, and it’s one of the top switch RPGs. Originally from 1994, it now has updated HD-2D graphics, making it even better. You get to choose the order of seven heroes’ stories, traveling through different time periods from the past to the future. Each hero’s tale takes a few hours to finish and they’re all thrilling. After completing them, there’s one final surprise. Overall, Live A Live is a lovely remake that captures the charm of the original.

Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VII is a classic game that helped shape RPGs for years. If you’re into RPGs, you should definitely try it out because it’s unlike any other experience. However, newer games have improved on its ideas in many ways. Even though Final Fantasy VII shows its age, it’s still a fun RPG with a good pace if you can overlook its old-fashioned aspects.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Pokemon Legends: Arceus changes up the usual Pokemon adventure by sending you back in time to the Hisui region, which later becomes Sinnoh. Here, Pokemon are more dangerous. You’ll start in Jubilife Village, researching and investigating strange rifts. Even if you’re not into Pokemon, Legends: Arceus is a fun RPG. It introduces action-packed, catching mechanics that spice up the experience.

Earthlock

Earthlock is a cool indie game on the Switch that feels like the old-school JRPGs from the PlayStation days. It’s got a beautiful world, fun characters, and cool battles. Although it has some issues, like inconsistent dialogue and long load times, it’s still a great game overall. If you want a JRPG that feels both new and nostalgic, Earthlock is a good pick.

Bravely Default 2

Bravely Default 2 is a new game in the series, so you don’t need to know anything about the previous ones to enjoy it. It follows four new characters: Seth, Gloria, Adelle, and Elvis. Just like in the other games, battles use the Brave and Default system, where you manage Brave Points. It might be tricky at first, but once you get it, it’s fun and rewarding.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole

South Park: The Fractured But Whole is a follow-up to The Stick of Truth, where you play as the New Kid. You team up with South Park characters in Coon and Friends to fight Professor Chaos. Despite its cartoon look, it’s not a game for kids because the humor is grown-up and sometimes offensive. You get to create your own superhero with a costume and superpowers while exploring South Park at night. Even though it’s similar to the first game, it’s a good choice for anyone wanting to try turn-based Nintendo Switch RPGs.

Octopath Traveler 2

Octopath Traveler 2 builds on the success of the original with stunning graphics and eight new character stories. Once you pick your starting character, the adventure begins. The stories are richer this time, and the turn-based battles are still fun. And no worries, you don’t have to play the first game to enjoy this one.

Child of Light: Ultimate Edition

Child of Light is a stunning RPG made with the same technology as Rayman Origins and Legends. You play as Aurora, trying to save your sick dad and your kingdom. You can also play co-op with a friend controlling Igniculus, a little light. Despite occasional framerate issues, the game offers big RPG fun in a small package, keeping its charm since its release.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch brings Studio Ghibli’s magical animation to life in an RPG. You play as Oliver, a boy trying to bring his mom back with the help of Mr. Drippy, a fairy. The game is full of charm with its captivating story and gameplay, making it a standout RPG on the Switch.

West of Loathing

West of Loathing is a totally unique RPG experience that you’ve probably never seen before. While the combat might not be the main attraction, the game is all about exploring, interacting, and a bit of fighting. It can be tricky at times, but figuring things out feels really rewarding. The humor is super dry and the writing is top-notch, making it a must-play RPG on the Switch, especially if you enjoy a good laugh.
