Top Movies About Cruise Ships to Delight All Ages

movies-about-cruise-ships

There are many movies about cruise ships, which span nearly 100 years. The Queen Mary from Cunard Line, which sailed from 1936 to 1967, was in a few movies, playing different roles like being romantic or being part of a crime. Many famous people like Marilyn Monroe, Fred Astaire, Kristen Bell, and even Alvin and the Chipmunks have acted in movies set on cruise ships. So, picking a movie for a cruise night can be hard.

Cruise ships can sometimes be seen in movies. For instance, in “21 Jump Street,” with Channing Tatum, there’s a Norwegian Spirit ship seen about two-thirds into the movie. In “The Birdcage,” a Carnival Cruise Line ship also shows up about halfway through. People who like spotting cruise ships in movies enjoy it almost as much as being on the ship’s pool deck.

So we made a list of movies about cruises (sorted by date) that will give you an idea of life on a cruise and make you excited about being in one in the future.

Top Cruise Ship Movies You Shouldn’t Miss Out On

Below are some notable movies about cruises you’ll love;

Parent Trap (1998)

In this new version of the old movie from 1961 where twins who look the same meet again, the twins (both acted by Lindsay Lohan) are trying to bring their parents back together at a wedding on a big ship called Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2. Even though you see a quick look at the outside of the ship, most of the parts on the ship were really recorded on another ship called the Queen Mary. This ship is parked in Long Beach, California today.

Jack and Jill (2011)

In this wacky funny movie, Adam Sandler takes on two roles – the main characters. He’s Jack, and his wife, played by Katie Holmes, is in the mix too. The story revolves around New Year’s time, where Jack and his family, including his identical sister Jill, decide to take a vacation on a big ship. This ship is super famous – it’s called the Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, and it’s the real star of the show.

Even though many folks think this movie is one of the not-so-good ones ever made, it’s got a cool side. It’s like a way to show off how amazing the ship is. There’s this thing called the FlowRider on it, sort of like a wild water ride. Then, there’s a wall you can climb up if you’re into that kind of thing, and even a carousel on the Boardwalk part of the ship.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (2011)

This is the third part of the Chipmunks’ real-life adventures, where Jason Lee is the star. The Chipmunks and the Chipettes, along with their friend Dave, decide to have a super fun holiday on a big cruise ship called Carnival Dream. They go to exciting places on this ship. Guess what? They didn’t just pretend – they actually went on a real cruise! They took videos of the outside of the ship and also showed what their rooms looked like inside. The cruise they took was in the Caribbean, and it lasted for a whole week.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)

Don’t let anyone tell you that getting excited about a cartoon cruise is a no-go. In this funny animated movie (it’s the third in the series about Hotel Transylvania), Dracula and his whole gang wave goodbye to their hotel and hop on a pretend cruise ship called Legacy.

The film is all about the fun parts of going on a cruise – you know, like playing games in the pool and eating as much as you want from the big buffet. But it also doesn’t shy away from showing the not-so-perfect moments, like when someone wears a tiny swimsuit on the sunny deck.

Like Father (2018)

Cruise-loving folks who enjoy watching stuff on Netflix have a special movie waiting for them. It’s called “Like Father.” In this story, there’s a lady who works too much (Kristen Bell is the actress), and something really surprising happens to her. Her wedding plans don’t work out, and she’s left all alone. But guess what? She decides to go on her honeymoon cruise anyway. This big ship is called Harmony of the Seas, and it belongs to Royal Caribbean. But here’s the twist – she goes with her dad, even though they’re not that close (that’s Kelsey Grammer playing her dad).

As the story goes, she meets a single guy on the ship, played by Seth Rogen. They start liking each other and spending time together while they’re on the cruise. But at the same time, she’s also dealing with her own struggles. Now, this movie isn’t all just laughs; it’s got some bittersweet moments too. People often call this kind of movie a “chick flick.” Even though it’s not exactly a comedy, it’s a good idea to watch. Especially if you want to see one of the most famous cruise ships, Harmony of the Seas, in action.
